First United Presbyterian Church is a member of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Our church was established in 1907 and the current building on the corner of East Avenue and Second Street in Elyria, OH was erected in 1912.
Our church centers itself and its mission on the teachings of Jesus Christ. We believe that Jesus was God incarnate and came to earth to redeem the world and to bring all people back into communion with their Creator.
We are a small urban church that is very active in our neighborhood and city.
One of our biggest outreach ministries is our Hot Meal Program. We serve community meals the last two Thursdays of every month at 5:00 pm. They are free and available to everyone who shows up. We have served 16,213 meals to 13,034 people over the last five years. Our congregation supports this program by volunteering their time and money throughout the year. We also accept financial donations from non-church members, which are tax-deductible.
We are part of The Basic Shelter Network in Elyria. We open our church up to house the homeless one week per month in the months of December through April.
We also have two major clothing giveaways; one in the spring and the other in the fall. These are free and open to the public. We collect gently used clothes from church members and friends so that we may distribute them to people in our community.
We began a household handouts program this past year. This will become an annual event every summer. This is free and open to the public. Items, such as linens, sheets, towels, small appliances, and toys are given away.
Our church also supports local ministries. We participate in the Clothe-a-Kid Program sponsored by Lorain County Love, INC. We also work with the Elyria Salvation Army. We also partner with the Church of the Open Door in their Family Fair by supplying book bags and school supplies for kids in need.
We support many missions in our city, our country, and around the world. You can find these ministries and their contact people listed on our website.
